The co-founders of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated that corporate owner Unilever blocked the launch of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, who established the business alongside his partner, revealed that he will personally create the controversial flavor as part of a personal collection showcasing issues the company was barred from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders versus Parent Company

This latest announcement intensifies the ongoing tension between the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.

The co-founders have claimed that the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

The Fruit Flavor becoming an Emblem for Support

The entrepreneur revealed via social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for the product's name plus additional components.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”

This particular fruit has become an emblem of solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, which mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement and Current Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in the occupied West Bank.

The new dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand which originally established in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts plus Future Intentions

Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to create additional ice cream flavors that address issues which the company was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.

The announcement comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, following decades with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.

Previously, Mr. Cohen remarked how “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can fulfill the social mission, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for decades," he told media outlets.
