Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.
An recent initialism emerged several months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is unique to Gaza, as stated by health professionals like paediatricians. Typically, it is rare for doctors to care for a minor who has lost their complete family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy in numerous doctors returning from a sea of ruins with reports of children being intentionally shot at.
A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire
Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that genocidal acts are continuing. The Israeli government disputes these claims, just as it disavows everything it is accused of. But while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, although at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, we are told, is what international harmony manifests as.
Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be treated differently.
A Double Standard
Forget the fact that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that global media are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy
Eurovision marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it once represented. An institution that once promoted peace has transformed into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
