Inuit Females Secure Judicial Victory in Struggle against the Danish State over Forced IUD Scandal.

Survivors from a historical campaign in which numerous comprising Greenlandic females, some minors were forcibly fitted using contraceptive coils absent informed permission are declaring victory in their court battle against the Danish government.

It has been announced that they will be eligible for financial redress via a reconciliation package.

Parliamentary Agreement Finalized

Folketinget, along with state authorities, reached an agreement that entitles an estimated 4,500 Greenlandic women to claim 300,000 DKK (around thirty-five thousand pounds) each.

The decision comes after a three-year battle led by a group of women who filed a lawsuit seeking damages over the trauma and distress they had endured, arguing it was a violation of their personal rights.

Historical Context

Denmark ruled the territory under colonial rule for decades and retained control of its medical services into the late 20th century.

In September, after years of failing to address the violations, Denmark issued a formal official apology. The prime minister apologized over the “institutional prejudice” against Greenlandic females by the state medical apparatus.

“It has had major consequences for the Greenlandic women who have experienced not only bodily but also psychological harm,” stated the government minister.

Redress Procedure Outlined

The health ministry stated that women subjected to the procedure without their knowledge or consent between 1960 and 1991 would be able to seek payment starting next year. Relevant legislation is set to be enacted by mid-year.

According to results from a independent inquiry into contraceptive practices from that era, roughly 4,500 women are potentially eligible for compensation.

For eligibility, the women must:

• Submit a “plausible account” of the incident.
• Have lived on the island throughout the qualifying period.
• Declare under oath that they had no knowledge nor gave permission for the procedure.

Perspectives of Victims

One of the women, who was 14 when she was told to report to the hospital for no clear reason, described it as feeling an assault.

“Speaking out as speakers and interviewees has been effective,” she said. “We started in 2022 resulting in within three years we got an apology plus compensation.”

Another perspective expressed satisfaction, stating, “We are happy. As my mother put it: we won.” Although some believe the amount could have been higher, there is contentment over the recognition of what happened.

Official Responses

A Greenlandic minister described the compensation as “long overdue”. Stating clearly, “This isn't about the money. It is about formal acknowledgment of the injury and its very severe consequences.”

A Danish health minister acknowledged the scandal was a “dark chapter in our shared history”, adding that compensation “cannot remove the suffering from the women” but it “serves to acknowledge and apologise for what they endured.”
