Mount Mahameru Outburst in the Southeast Asian nation Triggers Evacuations

The nation's Semeru volcano, the tallest summit on the island of Java, has exploded, blanketing multiple communities with volcanic ash, prompting evacuations and leading authorities to raise the alert to the highest level.

The volcano in East Java province unleashed searing clouds of fiery ash and a mixture of rock, lava and gas that travelled up to 4 miles down its slopes multiple times from noon to dusk, while a thick column of hot clouds rose 2km into the air, as stated by the nation's geological authority.

The eruptions that unfolded throughout the day forced officials to raise the volcano’s alert level on two occasions, from the third-highest level to the top level, the authority reported. No casualties have been announced.

Over three hundred residents in the three villages most endangered in the area of Lumajang were evacuated to government shelters, as mentioned by a representative for the national emergency management body.

He stated that increased activity of the volcano on Wednesday afternoon prompted authorities to expand the hazard area to 8km from the summit. People were urged to stay clear from an zone along the Besuk Kobokan River, which is the route of the lava flow, as scorching gases flowed down the volcano's sides.

Videos on online platforms showed a thick plume of volcanic dust sweeping through a forested valley to a river beneath a bridge. Residents, some with faces smeared with volcanic dust and rain, escaped to makeshift refuges or departed for other safe areas.

Local media reported that emergency teams were struggling to rescue about 178 people trapped on the 3,676-metre peak at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The group comprised 137 hikers, 15 porters, seven guides and six travel representatives, according to an official with the protected area.

“They are currently safe at the Ranu Kumbolo station,” a spokesperson said in a video statement. He said the post was situated 2.8 miles from the crater on the north side of the volcano, which is outside the trajectory of the fiery cloud movement that was observed traveling to the southeast direction. Inclement conditions and precipitation required the group to spend the night there, he added.

The volcano, also known as Mahameru, has erupted many occasions in the last two centuries. However, as is the case with numerous of the 129 active volcanoes in the archipelago, thousands of residents continue to live on its productive highlands.

The mountain's previous significant explosion was in late 2021, when 51 individuals were killed and several hundred others were burned and villages were submerged in thick mud. The event led to the relocation of more than 10,000 people from their houses.

The country, an island chain of over 280 million people, sits along the Pacific “ring of fire”, a curved series of tectonic boundaries, and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
