Putin Pledges Continuous Energy Deliveries to India in Snub of American Pressure

During a defiant signal to Western nations, Leader Vladimir Putin informed PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to maintain “unbroken” supplies of crude oil to India. This declaration came during a summit where both heads of state met in Delhi and affirmed their partnership were “resistant to outside influence.”

A Message Directed at the Western Countries

The statement, made on Friday, was widely seen to be a pointed rebuke at the United States and its allies, that have sought to pressure New Delhi into curtailing its historical ties with Moscow. The context follows earlier American measures, such as the imposition of tariffs on India due to its buying of discounted Russian crude.

“Our nation is a reliable exporter of energy resources and all required for the growth of India’s industry,” the Russian president stated. “Russia is prepared to keep ensuring the consistent delivery of energy for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Modi, without naming energy explicitly, reinforced the theme by noting that “secure fuel supplies has been a key and crucial cornerstone of the Indo-Russian alliance.”

Questioning US Interference

Before the meeting, during a media interview, Putin had questioned American pressure regarding India's energy purchases. The president questioned, “Should America can claim the privilege to buy our atomic materials, then why can't India claim the equivalent access?”

This trip was his maiden journey to India following the start of the situation in Ukraine, and both sides engaged in a deliberate attempt to demonstrate that the friendship between the men persisted strongly.

A Personal Greeting

Taking an rare gesture, the Indian PM welcomed directly Putin right off the plane. The two shared a warm hug akin to old friends before enjoying a private dinner the night before the summit.

The Indian prime minister in his statement called India's relationship with Russia as “a beacon” and added it was “based on shared respect and strong faith.”

Expanding Defence and Economic Ties

The bilateral summit produced a number of key agreements across defence and financial collaboration. A major outcome was the signing of an joint economic plan that runs to 2030, which targets to boost bilateral trade to a hundred billion USD per year by the target year.

Additionally agreed to reshape their strategic cooperation. While Russia is still India's biggest supplier of arms, the volume has diminished in recent years as India aims to broaden its sources.

Their communique stressed an agreement on the co-development of advanced weapons platforms, although explicit details of deals for the Su-57 fighter jet were omitted.

Ultimately, Russia and India affirmed that amid the “present intricate, tense, and unpredictable global landscape, the Indo-Russian partnership remain resilient to foreign influence.”
