Senegal's Rising Star Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
As I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a football he clings to until after our chat. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. âI only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,â remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and GĂ©nĂ©ration Foot. Yet, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. âHe was against me playing soccer but itâs because he hadnât seen me play,â explains Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
In time, on âa special day,â he received his dad's approval to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
However, the famed academy â the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio ManĂ©, Papiss CissĂ© and IsmaĂŻla Sarr â saw his potential instantly. After he earned the best player in a local competition, GĂ©nĂ©ration Foot were âastonishedâ to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. âI was taken straight to the training centre. They didnât want me from going back home,â Camara said.
An Unforgettable Year and European Arrival
That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, âa year to remember,â starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating ManĂ©. âAdapting was never a problem,â says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Influences and Playing Style
Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's âhumilityâ and superb skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his competitive fire, having been shown red at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. âIt is a habit that is following me!â he quips.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions
With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. âAs soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,â he said.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. âWe are the favourites â there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soilâŠ,â he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. âI am very comfortable here,â he insists. He is frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize down the line.
âWe are the favourites â we canât hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley⊠it gives you belief.â
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
