The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that Pluribus would emerge as a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the hit series reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Viewer Reception
One could easily to get swayed by the constant speculation and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to force fed something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff are not listening by fan response, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why mess with the classics?
“My dream is Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
